Outer Space Week

This week I didn't have to come up with as many things to do since Paige now has her laptop and her teacher has been posting things on there for her to do but I did include some fun simple things to go along with our theme for the week- outer space.

She had a math assignment each day that she did on her laptop from her teacher.
Then I would include something fun and simple for her to do that went with our theme. So Monday she did this fun math color by number.
For Monday's art the girls did galaxy rocks. They went outside together and found some rocks to paint. Then they painted them with blues, purple, and black paint.
Once that dried a little bit, Paige did the next part for all the rocks. She took an old toothbrush and sprayed on the white paint for the stars. I love how they turned out!
Then for writing, I tried to incorporate things from the packet that the school district sent and things that had to do with outer space. For Monday we read together this little paragraph about space suits and then she typed her own paragraph about what she learned on her computer.
For science, we learned about stars. First, we read a couple of paragraphs together about stars- how they are made, how different colors mean different levels of hotness, about constellations, and about their sizes and age. Then she took a little quiz to test her understanding of the text. Next she did some dot to dots with some simple constellations.
Then I printed off a whole bunch of different constellations and she created them with marshmallows and toothpicks. Baylor was happy to have her own little toothpick to pick up her marshmallows to eat. :)
Then they both created their own constellations with star stickers and connected the lines with a white crayon.
In the packet there was an idea page in it with things to do for spelling and writing. She picked these 2 and did some fun writing and creating this week.
Tuesday's math- Paige even got a little helper with her math on her computer today. :) Paige is an excellent big sister who lets Baylor help her push buttons and lets her have a turn.
Then for art it was creating star constellations using your name. We used chalk to show how you could smear it on the black paper and Baylor really enjoyed the smearing part.
We had a little test run on the computer to see how the Microsoft Teams program worked. Paige enjoyed seeing her teacher and then on Thursday she did it with the whole class so Paige got to see her teacher and her classmates. They will be doing this once a week and I know Paige will enjoy this small "social" time even if it's not quite the same as being at school.
On Wednesday for math Paige did her assignment from her teacher and a coloring page with the order of the planets (so it insisted of some counting and some learning about the planets at the same time) and then we did a space shuttle for art using their name.
She used her math assignment to help her complete the solar system cross word puzzle for writing. This week she also did some writing assignments out of the packet from the school district. Some of them have been a struggle since they are of no interest to Paige and aren't even things that they did at school but we are trying them out and see how best to incorporate the concepts into our school work.
For cooking the girls made some chocolate chip cookies. It was something fun and simple and they both enjoyed doing it together. After that was done, Paige and I talked about My Plate and the different food groups. We also are tracking what she is eating for a week just so she can visualize what she eats the most of and maybe what healthy things she can eat more of.
Thursday we started out with this star gazing pictograph and a computer assignment from her teacher.
Then for art they made a space shuttle out of a hand print.
They both turned out so cute but I really love Paige's!
For writing, she did one of the assignments in the packet and then for music we did musical cups. We put the water at different levels and Paige colored them with food coloring just for fun. We used a spoon to hear the different sounds. We tried different utensils to see what worked best for making the sounds and we even changed cups to see if that would change the sounds also.

Friday, Paige did a math assignment on her computer and then we did a paper plate outer space art project. They colored stars and planets and then painted the paper plate black to create their own outer space scene.
For writing, we did an assignment out of the packet and then we talked about what is a fact and what is an opinion Then we went through these astronomy statements together and Paige told me whether the statement was fact or opinion.
We finished off our school week with checking out our wormery. It has now been 2 weeks so Paige filled out the observation worksheet. It was cool to see the differences the worms made in 2 weeks. They created some great soil and had made so many tunnels and almost all the food was gone from the top and had been mixed in or decomposed into the soil.
Before on the left and after on the right
Her hypothesis and what we did on the first paper and her observation on the other.
We then released the worms back out into the wild. They can get to work helping out Nona's garden. Baylor finally held a worm for the first time. She was very unsure at first and Paige finally found one that wasn't as wiggly. Baylor held it for a little bit (enough time to get some pictures) and then it wiggled and she immediately dropped it. She was pretty proud of herself and went in to tell Nona and Pops that she held a "wiggly worm."
We made it through all the original themes that we came up with and so I asked Paige if she wanted to continue the themes. I wasn't sure if she would want to since she has most of her school work on her laptop now but she wants to continue (I think she likes the art projects most of all and that's probably her biggest reason of continuing with the themes). So we came up with themes for each week for the rest of the school year. Next week's theme: Under the Sea.
