This week's preschool was all about observing and experimenting. It was a fun science week. Tuesday Baylor started off by playing with some kinetic sand and then for art I gathered up a whole bunch of random crafts things that she could cut and glue and create with.
For music I let Baylor play the piano while we sang songs. She even knows how to play "Mary Had a Little Lamb" with a little help thanks to her big sister.
For learning time, we talked about things that melt or dissolve and how often heat is the thing that causes it. We first started with an ice cube on a plate. She swirled it around with her fingers and licked it a few times. I told her that the heat from her hands was melting it and turning the ice into water. Then I stuck a candle in a grape to hold it up and we watched the wax melt. Then we made some Jell-O for dinner and saw how the Jell-O mixture dissolved in the hot water.
And last we did crayon melting. I have a plate warmer and we put paper on it and got some old crayons and watched the crayon wax melt onto the paper and created some Picasso like art.
Wednesday she played the game with the golf tees for a little bit and then our focus for the day was rocks. For art she created a rock mosaic and colored a picture first and then we found little rocks out in the yard that she could glue on.
For music we sang some songs while she danced with the ribbon wand.
For learning time we went outside and found a whole bunch of different colored rocks. Then she hammered one of them to break it into pieces. We took the pieces inside and she looked at them through a magnifying glass. Then she took our different colored rocks and put them in water to see how the colors changed and became more vibrant.
For our outdoor time we went outside since it was a beautiful spring day. She rode her bike for a while and then we kicked the soccer ball back and forth. Then we went inside to read a big pile of books. Baylor absolutely loves books and we go to the library once a week to switch them out. She loves to be read to and she loves to sit and "read" by herself and look at all the pictures.
Thursday was an experiment day. Our first activity was stirring water and sugar into cups to watch it dissolve and see how the water changed colors.
Then for art she did salt painting. She put lots of glue lines on a paper and then we covered it with salt. Once that dried then she painted the lines with water colors and you can see the paint getting absorbed by the salt.
For music again she wanted to play the piano so that's what we did.
Then for learning time we did a lot of rainbow experiments. First, she colored on two ends of a paper towel with washable markers and then we put each end in a bowl of water and watched the colors absorb and move up the paper towel to make a rainbow.
Then she poured some milk in a bowl and put some drops of food coloring in the milk. I then gave her a Q-tip with some dish soap on it and see how the colors moved away and swirled around.
Last we put Skittles in a circle around a plate. Then she poured hot water on them and got to see the colors melt out of the Skittles and into the water to see this pretty rainbow wheel.
We then took advantage of the weather being somewhat nicer and no rain and the girls took their babies for a walk. Then they played with them for about 1 1/2 hours in the front yard. I just sat on the front porch and relaxed and read some. It was nice to be outside even though I was in a jacket and bundled in a blanket and it made me ready for warmer weather where we can spend more time outside.
