It's crazy that we are getting close to the end of the school year- only 2 weeks left! This past week we had a fun theme- Beach Week.
Monday's math that went with our theme was a sand castle dot to dot. It was cute to watch because Paige let Baylor "help" her and if you look above the door, Baylor drew a cute little person.
Then for art they did 2 different starfish. The first one they decorated with markers and stickers and the second one they decorated with buttons.
Paige had a class meeting on her computer to introduce the lessons for the week. After her meeting, she worked on her math assignment and also her ELA.
Then for writing, I read Paige some fun beach facts and then she wrote an informational paragraph. It says, "Here are some fun beach facts! According to the Guinness world records, the tallest sand castle was constructed in Connecticut, USA, in May 2011. It was 37 feet and 10 inches tall!!! The ocean covers 71% of the whole world that would mean only 29% of the world is land!! Sea turtles only come ashore to lay their eggs. Depending on the type of sediment that makes up the sand, beaches can come in many different colors such as: white, gold-yellow, brown, red, and black!!"
Then for cooking we first did this cooking verb cross word puzzle together.
Then we made a smores pie. It turned out delicious and was a bit of an experiment since we didn't want to go to the store and just use what we had on hand. We made a graham cracker crust, then used instant chocolate pudding for the filling, and big marshmallows cut in half for the top. Paige did most of it with a little help from me.
Tuesday, Paige first did her math assignment on her computer and then she did this summer graphing worksheet for our theme math.
For art, they created these cute cupcake liner crabs and decorated with markers and little sequins.
Then Paige did her ELA on her computer and also did a journal entry. It says, "To go to the beach you will need: a shovel and pail, a sun umbrella, a picnic, a bag for seashells and rocks you collect, a swimming suit, and sunscreen. So that is what you will need to go to the beach!"
Then for P.E. we switched it up from past weeks and the girls rode their bikes.
While they were riding I created a little maze/workout that Paige could do on the sidewalk. I showed her how to go through it and then she went over it as many times as she wanted. After that she decided that she wanted to create a bike maze for her to go through on the driveway. She made lines that she had to follow and then at certain points she wrote wave, stand up, and ring bell.
For her science on her computer they learned about water sources throughout the week. Each day there was a little something to do and I just wanted to post these cute pictures that she drew on her computer about water sources around her and that she has used. (Left one is her playing in the sprinkler, top right is seeing baby ducks at Lake Meridian, and bottom right is a picture of when we went to White River and Baylor sitting on the rocks and putting her feet in the water.)
Wednesday started with her computer math and then this beach word problem worksheet.
Then for art they used water colors to paint a paper plate seashell.
Paige then did her ELA assignment on her computer and for her writing I asked her to write a narrative about going to the beach. It says, "Once upon a time there was a girl names Satie and she was twelve years old and she had a younger sister named Chloe and she was seven years old and they had a little brother named Henry. He was three years old. The kids and the parents decided that they were going to the beach. The family brought: swimming suits, beach ball, sunscreen floaties, towels, sun umbrella, and a picnic. So they went to the beach! The End!!"
Then for science we made salt dough starfish. Paige decided to also make some seashells, a sand dollar, and a sea anemone. You can cook them or let them dry and then paint them. We saved the painting and doing another science experiment for Thursday since Addison was coming over (Paige is so excited that she gets to play with her again!!!)
Thursday's math- it was so cute watching Paige and Baylor interact while Paige did her homework assignment on her computer. Paige lets Baylor pick and color for each problem that she does and then Paige will teach Baylor and walk through how to do each problem. Then for our math we did a dice game. Paige and I each had a dice and the little beach pictures on the bottom represented a number on the dice. We each rolled the dice over and over and marked which one we got until one of the categories hit the top. Then we stopped and talked about which one had the most and which had the least. It was quick but fun!
Paige had a class meeting for a read aloud and doing an activity with her P.E. teacher. Then she did her ELA and her journal writing since she wanted to save art and all the fun things when Addison came over. Her journal entry says, "My favorite thing to do at the beach is build sand castles and collect seashells and rocks, and put my feet in the water!"
Then Addison came over and they first did the art project we had planned for the day. It was coffee filter decorating and then gluing beach animal silhouettes on them.
They turned out pretty cool!
Then they did the second science experiment that we had planned- making a volcano. I cut off the top of a water bottle and then they shoveled dirt around it to make the volcano shape. Then you put baking soda in the bottom of the bottle and then add vinegar. We tried adding some food coloring but it didn't work so we got a white volcano!
Slowing exploding!
Then I put Baylor down for the nap and Addison and Paige played in the hot tub and then they got to paint the salt dough star fish and a sea shell. I loved seeing them giggling and talking and having fun creating. They are the best of friends and it is great for them to be together again!
Friday, Paige did her math assignment on her computer and then did this cute addition color by number.
She had a fun bonus class meeting for those that did their computer assignments each day and learned how to draw this cute dog and then we ended our week by going to the beach! We packed a picnic and went to Salt Water State Park.
We got there at low tide so we walked around looking at all the cool shells and rocks. We found lots of tiny crabs which Baylor loved and would excitedly point whenever she saw one. We loved lifting rocks up and seeing all the crabs scamper away and under the rocks there are always cool shells, snails, sea anemone, and hermit crabs.
Nate in his happy place!
All sorts of cool creatures!
Then we had our lunch and after that it was playing in the sand! Both girls loved it!
It was a perfect way to end our beach week and also the perfect way to celebrate Nate's birthday!
Once we got home and while Baylor was napping, Paige finished up her ELA for the week and also her science assignment online. I also helped her with her music assignment since we didn't get to it on Thursday with Addison coming over. For her ELA, Paige and I learned together how to draw a stegosaurus.
Then she also did this quick opinion writing. Would you rather play in the sand or in the water? "I would rather play in the sand because you can build stuff."
With going to the beach and celebrating Nate's birthday in the evening we never got around to doing Friday's art project so we did it on Saturday. They used glue and dirt to decorate a sand castle.
For a fun P.E. assignment that Paige has been working on the past few weeks is a virtual field day. The P.E. teacher posted 20+ challenges to do and then you record yourself and post it on this website. You can see how other kids in the school have done them and you can do as many as you want. Paige has done a jumping jack one and a jump rope one. Paige and I also did a handshake one together. This past week Paige did the middle one which was a chalk art challenge and then the fruits and vegetables was to create something healthy with art and that is what Paige came up it. She is one creative girl!
Then Saturday afternoon we did some sewing. Paige has been wanting to make scrunchies for quite awhile now and so we finally got around to making them. She got much more comfortable sewing the straight stitch on the sewing machine and said it was fun. With more practice she will be sewing all sorts of projects by herself.
She made some for her and some for Addison and her little sister. They turned out pretty cute!
What a fun week! Next's weeks theme: Seasons!
